St. Athanasius Centre

St. Athanasius Centre

Location:     Mississauga, Ontario

Program:     Addition

Commissioned by the Coptic Church of Mississauga, ATA is the Principal Architect for the new St. Athanasius Centre, an approximately 104,000sf development.

The St. Athanasius Centre will be an addition to the existing Canadian Coptic Centre. The 5-level addition will be located in the northeast corner of the complex where the existing 1-storey “original” Church Community Multi-Use Hall is to be demolished (961sm).

This facility, which will include a private school and daycare, will be a multifunctional community space. The centre will be a cornerstone for the local community, providing educational and social services in a well-designed, cohesive environment.

This new centre will be nestled in the northeast corner, between the two churches, The Virgin Mary and St. Athanasius, and surrounded by an exterior courtyard (on level B1).

Working with Mantecon Partners and Baker Turner Landscape Architects, the design intends to work flawlessly with the architecture of the two existing churches. As viewed from Eglinton Avenue, the new facility will offer a dramatic tiered backdrop with views into the public spaces behind.

The new St. Athanasius Centre will provide a variety of critical community services and amenities and will become the future space for the following program:

  • level B1: Student Lounge, Lunchroom, Commercial Kitchen, Holy Bread Baking, Church offices and Meeting Rooms
  • level L1: Chapel/Church Multi-Use Hall, Commercial Kitchen, Loading Area, Coptic Diocese Administration Office and main entrance
  • level L2: 10 Private Elementary/Sunday School Classrooms and Teaching Office, Conference Room and Lunchroom
  • level L3: 12 Private Elementary/Sunday School Classrooms and Lecture Hall
  • level L4: “Dignitary/Bishop’s” Community Multi-Use Hall, Commercial Kitchen, Private Chapel and Bishop/Priest Residence Apartment.
  • Penthouse L5: Mechanical space.

The driving force behind the design is to balance the modern addition in a harmonious union with the existing architecture. The design emphasizes both functionality and aesthetic appeal, creating a welcoming atmosphere for all users. This project will serve as an example of complex, multi-use facilities that serve diverse community needs.

ATA wishes to extend special thanks to the Canadian Coptic Centre Building Committee including Nashed Youssef, Ramy Youakim and the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of Mississauga and Vancouver.

The project is currently in construction.
