For over 40 years, the Freelton Lions Club has been responsible for the installation and maintenance of a natural ice rink in the Freelton Community Park. In 2015, the club envisioned creating a larger, more comfortable facility for the community. With the support of Ward 14 Councilor Robert Pasuta, the City of Hamilton purchased an adjoining property with the intention of expanding the 60-year-old park.
The City retained ATA to develop a master plan for the site, which includes a 60 by 100-foot refrigerated ice surface, a multi-purpose field house and additional parking. In keeping with the park’s rural context, ATA sited the field house back from Freelton Road, shielding the parking lot from passersby. By locating the ice surface at the front of the site, the park’s openness is maintained.
On Saturday, November 26th, 2016, the community turned out in large numbers to show their appreciation and support for the Lions Club and the City of Hamilton. Hot dogs and chili were served to warm up the crowd in attendance. Everyone was in good spirits and pleased with the completed facility.
